as usual, I need your help.
I'm writing my personal statement, and I was wondering if you guys had any short quotes? Looking for something inspirational or on experience/making a difference.
So far I've got:

So far I've got:
All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Nothing is a waste of time if you use the time wisely.
- Auguste Rodin
We must overcome the notion that we must be regular... It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary and leads you to the mediocre.
- Uta Hagen

Blaze your own trail, my padawan.

OBVIOUSLY, I AM LISTENING TO HER SINCE I'M SURE I'VE BLAZED MY OWN TRAIL BY NOT QUOTING SOMETHING LIKE DARWIN OR ANYONE PRETENTIOUS LIKE NOW. SO YEAH. PICK ME?

Date: 2011-07-05 05:48 am (UTC)"I WILL SELL DRUGS FROM MY VAN AND MAKE LOTS OF MONEY AND BECOME A DRUG LORD."
OBVIOUSLY, VIVI.
jk. split it into three parts?
1) personal -- i want to help people +wibblewiblle+ or, my history with drugs, or, why i'm interested in pharmacology (AND NO MONEY IS NOT AN ANSWER)
2) educational -- i am a smart motherfucker and this is how i will show you that: +list generous and true achievements here+
3) professional -- these are the places i worked. when i worked at mcdonalds i learned putting weird shit in your body is BAD.
HOW THIS RELATES TO MY GOALS
a) immediate -- i want to GROW AS A PERSON and learn a lot about drugs and stuff, and also go to college and become a real
boygirl.b) long-term -- i want to become a _________ with my doctorate in pharmacology because i have always wanted to wear the white lab coat. also, i find the mathematical precision of measuring medicine and solving problems beautiful; it is amazing how something so precise can at the same time be so human, so helpful.
OKAY? alksdfkl *\o/* GO VIVI.

Date: 2011-07-09 01:47 am (UTC)but no, i'll probably pull something out of The Little Prince or Hemingway or some poem /o\
no subject
Date: 2011-07-09 01:50 am (UTC)Less so Hemingway, but only because my ridiculous fondness for 20th C American writers is picky.
no subject
Date: 2011-07-10 04:05 am (UTC)and i mean, it's totally applicable! seeing things in innovative ways, growing up while embracing your inner child, etc.
lol I'm eh, on Hemingway. He has his brilliance though, but maybe, if I wanted to talk about ~coming of age~ I should go with Kerouac.
but Saint Exupery is just so much more charming

Date: 2011-07-10 04:07 am (UTC)Honestly, I used to be a huge Hemingway fan. Then I discovered a ton of other 20th C Am. authors that are just...better. Of course, I'm one of those people who will extoll the virtues of Sherwood Anderson until I'm blue in the face--amongst others. 8D;;;
no subject
Date: 2011-07-10 04:44 am (UTC)I didn't have much exposure to American authors until after high school, and even then it's just been like "oh, I HAVE HEARD THIS TITLE, i guess i will give it a try." DOESN'T WORK OUT TOO WELL SOMETIMES. ...and what i meant to say was: do you have any 20th c am author recs? XD;;

Date: 2011-07-10 05:03 am (UTC)YOU WILL NOTE I HAVE A FONDNESS FOR 1930s NOVELS
Date: 2011-07-10 05:12 am (UTC)The Big Money by John Dos Passos (it's the third in a trilogy, but stands on its own and is by far the best of the three)
Miss Lonelyhearts and the Day of the Locust by Nathanael West (actually two novellas)
Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson (or just the stories "Hands" and "Paper Pills")
Other highly recommended novels:
The Iron Heel by Jack London (just barely 20th C, but whatever no one reads it and they should)
Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon (but only if you're a true masochist)
The Unpossessed by Tess Slessinger (particularly if interested in feminism)
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien
Industrial Valley by Ruth McKenney (sort of a docunovel about propaganda/news/communal action)
Whose Names Were Unknown by Sanora Babbs (especially as an interesting juxtaposition if you've read Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, which actually wasn't published until 2004 but was written around the same time as Steinbecks so I'm including it--it wasn't published because it was assumed that Steinbeck would overshadow her and 'there were enough depression novels out')
(Obviously, these are just personal favorites and highly biased to my own interests. Also, these are things that might turn up in a 20th C American Novel class, so no science fiction or anything, though I love it dearly. Also, I feel the need to point out that a lot of the time a novel is taught in high school in a lackluster way that drains all enthusiasm for the damn thing or popularized despite it not being the best of the author's work. For instance, The Great Gatsby is so much more interesting if you look at it from the perspective of 'The American Dream is getting away with murder' as well as the normal or instead of reading O Pioneers! or My Antonia by Willa Cather one tries My Mortal Enemy...)
/shuts up before you're scared off forever D:
