 HI FLIST.
as usual, I need your help.
I'm writing my personal statement, and I was wondering if  you guys had any short quotes? Looking for something inspirational or on experience/making a difference.

So far I've got:

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Nothing is a waste of time if you use the time wisely.
- Auguste Rodin
We must overcome the notion that we must be regular... It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary and leads you to the mediocre.
- Uta Hagen

VIVI. YOU ARE BETTER THAN THESE FAKES.

Ralph Waldo Emerson doesn't have anything on you.

Blaze your own trail, my padawan.

...EMILY...EMILY BRONTE?

sdflksdfjl but no omg this is what my essay would say: MY FRIEND EMILY HAS ALWAYS TOLD ME THIS: BLAZE YOUR OWN TRAIL, MY PADAWAN. OBVIOUSLY, I AM LISTENING TO HER SINCE I'M SURE I'VE BLAZED MY OWN TRAIL BY NOT QUOTING SOMETHING LIKE DARWIN OR ANYONE PRETENTIOUS LIKE NOW. SO YEAH. PICK ME?

Your Personal Essay should address why you selected pharmacy as a career and how the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to your immediate and long-term professional goals. Describe how your personal, educational, and professional background will help you achieve your goals. The personal essay is an important part of your application for admission and provides you with an opportunity for you to clearly and effectively express your ideas.

but nothing will ever top the trail blazer quote i am sure
I MEAN, IT'S PRETTY UNIQUE AND OUTSTANDING RIGHT?

Doctor of Pharmacy

"I WILL SELL DRUGS FROM MY VAN AND MAKE LOTS OF MONEY AND BECOME A DRUG LORD."

OBVIOUSLY, VIVI.

jk. split it into three parts?

1) personal -- i want to help people +wibblewiblle+ or, my history with drugs, or, why i'm interested in pharmacology (AND NO MONEY IS NOT AN ANSWER)

2) educational -- i am a smart motherfucker and this is how i will show you that: +list generous and true achievements here+

3) professional -- these are the places i worked. when i worked at mcdonalds i learned putting weird shit in your body is BAD.

HOW THIS RELATES TO MY GOALS

a) immediate -- i want to GROW AS A PERSON and learn a lot about drugs and stuff, and also go to college and become a real boy girl.

b) long-term -- i want to become a _________ with my doctorate in pharmacology because i have always wanted to wear the white lab coat. also, i find the mathematical precision of measuring medicine and solving problems beautiful; it is amazing how something so precise can at the same time be so human, so helpful.

OKAY? alksdfkl *\o/* GO VIVI.

SO I just wrote my personal statement (for law school) back in fall and I ended up using something from a favorite novel (Ellison's Invisible Man) which basically said 'in spite of myself, I learned some things.' The moral of the very short and boring anecdote being this: whatever quotes you're using or looking to for inspiration, make it personal and unique and you, because that (YOU) is what's interesting here. ♥

NO NO I WANT ALL YOUR OPINIONS OK ♥

what are my chances if I use a mean girls quote ;__;
VIVI MAY SEEM LIKE YOUR TYPICAL SELFISH, BACKSTABBING, SLUT-FACED HO BAG, but in reality she is so much more than that.

Date: 2011-07-09 12:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dialectical.livejournal.com
AHAHAHA, IT WOULD BE MEMORABLE. THEY WOULD BE LIKE 'OH SHI--WE NEED ONE MORE.' AND SOMEONE ELSE WOULD SAY 'HOW ABOUT THE SELFISH, BACKSTABBING, SLUT-FACED HO BAG?'

IN MY OPINION: WINNING STRATEGY.

(Don't worry so much, whatever you end up writing will be great. ♥)

♥ aaaaa, i know, but it's like one of those things were I don't even know where to start (in the, I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY?? way not the I HAVE SO MUCH TO TELL YOU way). I JUST WANT TO BE CLEVER AND FUNNY WITHOUT SOUNDING FORCED AND/OR PRETENTIOUS ;_;

Just...start typing. I KNOW WORST ADVICE EVER.

BUT everything I write ends up looking nothing like the original, but it makes me feel accomplished and gets better with every draft. SO, IDK.

well if it's just the draft I AM TOTALLY USING A MEAN GIRLS QUOTE

but no, i'll probably pull something out of The Little Prince or Hemingway or some poem /o\

From: [identity profile] dialectical.livejournal.com
...I have a huge soft spot for The Little Prince so I TOTALLY SUPPORT THIS PLAN. :D

Less so Hemingway, but only because my ridiculous fondness for 20th C American writers is picky.

From: [identity profile] phenylic.livejournal.com
The Little Prince is one of my favorite books ever ♥_♥
and i mean, it's totally applicable! seeing things in innovative ways, growing up while embracing your inner child, etc.

lol I'm eh, on Hemingway. He has his brilliance though, but maybe, if I wanted to talk about ~coming of age~ I should go with Kerouac.

but Saint Exupery is just so much more charming

Date: 2011-07-10 04:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dialectical.livejournal.com
SUCH GOOD TASTE YOU. ♥ ♥ ♥ And The Little Prince is just one of those books that grows with you, you know? There's enough to enjoy while you're young, but as you get older you appreciate it on more levels. ajsdijldajfa so much love.

Honestly, I used to be a huge Hemingway fan. Then I discovered a ton of other 20th C Am. authors that are just...better. Of course, I'm one of those people who will extoll the virtues of Sherwood Anderson until I'm blue in the face--amongst others. 8D;;;

Date: 2011-07-10 04:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] phenylic.livejournal.com
YES. I actually never read it up until a year ago, and when I finished it I was just like excuse me why hasn't anyone have me read this before now!!!

I didn't have much exposure to American authors until after high school, and even then it's just been like "oh, I HAVE HEARD THIS TITLE, i guess i will give it a try." DOESN'T WORK OUT TOO WELL SOMETIMES. ...and what i meant to say was: do you have any 20th c am author recs? XD;;

I'LL JUST WAIT HERE SHALL I? +makes self comfortable+

YOU WILL NOTE I HAVE A FONDNESS FOR 1930s NOVELS

Date: 2011-07-10 05:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dialectical.livejournal.com
MUST READ:
The Big Money by John Dos Passos (it's the third in a trilogy, but stands on its own and is by far the best of the three)
Miss Lonelyhearts and the Day of the Locust by Nathanael West (actually two novellas)
Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson (or just the stories "Hands" and "Paper Pills")

Other highly recommended novels:
The Iron Heel by Jack London (just barely 20th C, but whatever no one reads it and they should)
Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon (but only if you're a true masochist)
The Unpossessed by Tess Slessinger (particularly if interested in feminism)
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien
Industrial Valley by Ruth McKenney (sort of a docunovel about propaganda/news/communal action)
Whose Names Were Unknown by Sanora Babbs (especially as an interesting juxtaposition if you've read Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, which actually wasn't published until 2004 but was written around the same time as Steinbecks so I'm including it--it wasn't published because it was assumed that Steinbeck would overshadow her and 'there were enough depression novels out')

(Obviously, these are just personal favorites and highly biased to my own interests. Also, these are things that might turn up in a 20th C American Novel class, so no science fiction or anything, though I love it dearly. Also, I feel the need to point out that a lot of the time a novel is taught in high school in a lackluster way that drains all enthusiasm for the damn thing or popularized despite it not being the best of the author's work. For instance, The Great Gatsby is so much more interesting if you look at it from the perspective of 'The American Dream is getting away with murder' as well as the normal or instead of reading O Pioneers! or My Antonia by Willa Cather one tries My Mortal Enemy...)

slkajfdslkfjlkasdf I JUST WANT TO ROLL UP IN THIS LIST FOREVER you can't scare me away ok, i had to tackle the king james version of the bible all by myself in high school. after that, everything is just fantastic and refreshing and i want to read it all ♥_♥
From: [identity profile] dialectical.livejournal.com
JUST FOR THE RECORD, IF I COULD ONLY READ ONE NOVEL FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, IT WOULD BE THE BIG MONEY. JS.

asjdjaldsjasl they made you read the Bible? Really? I mean, I've read it if only so I get the references in lit, but. what.
From: [identity profile] phenylic.livejournal.com
WELL I WENT TO A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL SO I MEAN, IT WASN'T LIKE COMPLETELY OUT OF LEFT FIELD. but omg we had to read books from a pre-approved list which is why i'd never even touched anything considered to be a "classic" until i was in like, 10th grade and realized that it's not like anyone was strictly policing the rule so i'd start bringing stuff to school like wilde and harry potter (pfffft, i only got a bit of shit for that, but then i realized all i had to do was take off the cover paper and no one would ever notice.
From: [identity profile] dialectical.livejournal.com

A LOT.
